- The introduction of the copper bettas also caused an increase of color on the body which can even completeley cover the head. This is called mask.
Mask again can be divided into two types: Half-mask (Heterozygotic mask): The head is half colored. Full-mask (Homozygotic mask): The head is also fully colored!
I personally indeed think that mask is recessive or actually intermediate. Because for example the offspring of a non-mask x mask cross will mostly already show some degree of color on the head, this I referred to in my earlier post as half-masks.
In my lines the signs of masking mostly starts to show a bit later then the point where the rest of the body also starts to show the color. It becomes more intense as the fish grows. I think the genetics behind this are not entirely clearified yet. I personally believe that the masking trait is recessive (or actually intermediar). This means that when a full mask fish (homozygous mask) is paired with a non-masked fish this can lead to heterozygous mask offspring (F1). Keep in mind here that the degree of masking will greatly differ in the offspring, some will show some masking while other don't show it. The next generation (F2) will give you fish with more masking signs or maybe even some full masks. I think selection also plays a great role here.
